Like Saturday’s spectacularly effective messaging, when he used his allotted time on prime-time television to make this statement: 503 yards of total offense, including passing for a career-high 470 yards in USC’sWith the win, the Trojans both clinched a berth in the Pac-12 championship game in Lincoln Riley’s first year as the team’s head coach and furthered their case for a spot in the four-team College Football Playoff — which helps if you’re running for Heisman.
Ranked No. 7 by the CFP selection committee entering Saturday’s game, the Trojans beat their intracity rival Bruins, ranked No. 16, on their home turf. And they did it by proving they can handle adversity, storming back from an unfamiliar 14-0 deficit to win a shootout for the ages — on a day that No. 5 Tennessee lost, as did No. 13 North Carolina, which will sap a little luster from the Tar Heels’ upcoming meeting with No. 9 Clemson in the ACC title game.
USC is in position to capitalize because Williams, a 20-year-old sophomore from Washington, D.C., drove USC to victory again with a performance that was as effective a vehicle for a Heisman candidacy as Don Draper could script. Or, for that matter, Trojans coach/campaign manager Riley, who helped Oklahoma quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray win Heismans..
