With a new baby due in October and 39 rookies on the roster, the coach’s patience could be tested in the wee morning hours just as it will be during his days at the office.

NEWPORT BEACH — At the mention of the oddsmakers’ prediction for the Rams – over/under 6.5 wins – Coach Sean McVay recoiled as if, well, as if a baby had just pooped in his face: “Oh, man.”The win total, I mean. It would be a stinky outcome compared with the precedent set in all the winning seasons under McVay, from 2017 through the Rams’ Super Bowl run in 2021. But it’s also what’s to be expected from a team filled with kids.

Spoken like a dad-to-be who can’t know what he doesn’t yet know – such as how likely that particular prediction is to come true. And possibly how much dang patience the entire enterprise will require. “When I first came in, I didn’t even know Jordan Fuller was the Ohio State safety!” said the second-year cornerback Durant – who, by the way, credited his mom’s parenting, particularly her emphasis on oral hygiene, for a smile that’s so bright that people tend to think he’s wearing veneers.

Durant doesn’t like it: “They got us ranked 32 out of 32 teams in the secondary, both safeties and corners, so that speaks for itself. I always carry a chip on my shoulder, and I know the guys in my room – especially this year – are really carrying a chip because of where they got us placed.” Long term, that could benefit a Rams team that insists it’s not rebuilding, but remodeling. Welcoming in fresh ideas, you might say? Trying out different looks. Experimenting, on some level.

After a taxing, disappointing 2022 season, the 37-year-old McVay needed a few days to contemplate his future and whether he’d rather pursue his aspirations to become a TV analyst.
