So I went to Christie's and asked Pat Frost, international specialist and director of vintage couture, handbags, and luggage, to evaluate my collection. I had admired the sale she handled for muse and icon Daphne Guinness last year. And I wanted an expert who had a deep knowledge of fashion history—someone who was interested in putting my clothes in context, not just emptying my closets. We decided on an online sale, to reach a global fashion world. It will start on July 11.
My passion for colorful fashion started when I was still at Cambridge and was befriended by Idanna Pucci. She invited me to her home in Florence and introduced me to her uncle Emilio Pucci, and I spent every Italian cent I had on buying those joyously patterned clothes. I still think the papal-pink-and-chocolate-brown silk jersey palazzo pajamas, with the flourish of"Emilio" as a squiggle of branding, is one of the most gorgeous outfits I have owned.
I still craved fantasy, if not with color, in the bijoux that rattled at my wrists and filled up my neckline with gilded glamour. Chanel cuffs were fab, although I never felt quite myself in Coco suits, even when given the Karl Lagerfeld edge. The clothes that fire up my emotions are colorful and"different" pieces. My eye still picks out gilded-cloque glamour from among Burberry's streamlined trench coats or a hand-printed coat from Dries Van Noten.
