The North Cowichan Fire Department first received an automatic alarm from the school just after 9:50 p.m. on Dec.

31, and when firefighters arrived they saw smoke coming from the building and upgraded the call to a structure fire, according to North Cowichan Fire Asst. (Nigel Robertson) Lyle Jordan, who lives in the area, says crowds gathered to watch the firefighting efforts, and notes that fireworks were heard throughout the night. DeJong tells CHEK News that the fire was considered suspicious, though the cause is still under investigation. Jeff Rowan, interim superintendent of the Cowichan Valley School District (SD79), also told CHEK News the fire is considered suspicious.Rowan says that while the damage to the school was significant and “heartbreaking,” all students will be welcomed back for classes when school returns from winter break on Monday, Jan. 6. He says the fire only damaged one portion of the school which houses the music room and several Grade 6 and 7 classrooms. Students who normally attend classes in the damaged portion of the school will move to other areas of the school while repairs are made.this year, which is home to 15 classrooms for students in Kindergarten to Grade 7
