SAN ANTONIO - A suspected car burglar is dead after being shot trying to break into a car on the Northwest Side.

The shooting happened just before 2:30 a.m. Monday at The Reserve along Babcock Road near West Hausman. The car owner told police that he was in his apartment when he heard glass break outside. He went outside and found the suspect, a 26-year-old man, trying to steal his vehicle. He fired one shot, hitting the suspect, who was still sitting in the vehicle, in the side of the chest.The resident told investigators that he believe the suspect had a weapon and was protecting his property.
