Online shopping while drunk may be worth billions to the U.S. economy
Data journalist covering technological, societal and media topicsThere are plenty of surveys about online shopping but one of the more overlooked trends is the amount people spend while inebriated. Given that we can now make major purchases from our sofas with the click of a button, this has happened to most of us at one stage or another. After a few glasses of wine or a couple of beers, we come home, whip out the laptop and purchase something we barely remember the next morning.
Amazon is the platform of choice, used by 85% of the Hustle's drunk shopping readers and it's followed by eBay and Etsy . Clothing and shoes are the most common purchase under the influence with movies and games the next most popular shopping categories. The survey also found that women are slightly more likely than men to shop while drunk and that generally makes sense as women are known to shop more, particularly online.
