With Phoenix Suns players, coaches and staff present, Cameron Payne had his No. 1 Murray State jersey retired Saturday at CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.

The team took a 90-minute bus ride from New Orleans the day in between“You want to support your guys however you can,” Suns guard Landry Shamet said. “Coach says it a lot, you can’t say family and not do the stuff that is required of family. It was cool to be there and support . Big day for him. Emotional day for him. Not many people get their name and number in the rafters of a building forever. That’s pretty special. It was awesome to see and be there to support him.

“Man, it was awesome,” Payne said. “I was so grateful and thankful for them being there. It just shows the character of our squad, of our team. We’ve just got high character guys. Also shows the type of guy I am that they were even willing to drive 2 ½ hours to come see that. I just appreciate them. It was a golden opportunity, glad they were able to make it.”

Payne was at Sunday’s practice in Memphis as he’s scheduled for a re-evaluation later this month. He had missed nine games with a right foot strain, returned Jan. 2 at New York, but re-injured his foot Jan. 4 at Cleveland.“I haven’t started doing anything,” Payne said. “I think when I get back into Phoenix, I think we should be doing our next checkups and check off a few things for me to get back on the court.
