University of Toronto ethicist Kerry Bowman finds it all ethically problematic. “If the public gets the impression that organ donation could lead to something like this, people may find this very disturbing.”Article content Bowman worries that the limits of law and ethics are being tested and stretched. While, in Canada and the U.S., research ethics protocols stop applying at the time of death, “there are many people in our society that would not consider someone that is brain dead and still with a heartbeat and perfusing and blood flowing as being completely dead,” Bowman said.

When the ethicists from within and outside NYU first began meeting, some initially thought, “this is weird,” Caplan said. Some worried it was disrespectful of the dead. “We had to address those concerns and say, we’re not going to keep somebody alive for a year in a building.”
