A surfer died Sunday after being pulled from the water at Moonstone Beach, near Trinidad, the Humboldt County sheriff’s office said.
Deputies were called at 3:50 p.m. for a surfer in distress. The woman had reportedly become unattached from her surfboard and was “overcome by waves,” the sheriff’s report said. She was pulled unconscious to the shore by another beachgoer, and a Coast Guard helicopter took her to a hospital in Eureka. She was pronounced dead there.that Scarfia had graduated the previous day from the nursing program at College of the Redwoods.
The sister said Scarfia lost consciousness in the water because of an unspecified medical emergency. The sheriff’s office said an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
