Mt. Carmel handles Falcons, who suffer another big injury with running back Josh Nguyen going out
Already banged up after the first three weeks of the season, the Falcons lost a game and another senior starter during nonleague action Friday night at Mt. Carmel. The host Sundevils held on for a 13-9 victory, giving Mt. Carmel its third straight win after a season-opening loss.
Senior running back Josh Nguyen, who scored the Falcons’ only touchdown of the game on a second-period run of 13 yards, went down late in the third quarter after being hit along the sideline following another 13-yard gain. Nguyen did not return to action, but Leatherwood’s replacement, junior quarterback Rowan Wimmer, did return to the field after temporarily being sidelined following a roughing-the-passer penalty midway through the third quarter.
An interception and a fumble out of quick-kick formation ended Mt. Carmel’s next two possessions, and the visitors responded after taking over at the Sundevils’ 28-yard line following the quick-kick attempt. Scripps Ranch scored four plays later when Nguyen rambled 13 yards off right tackle to knot the score at 6-6 with 6:55 left in the first half.
Bell scored the go-ahead touchdown nine plays later on a 1-yard quarterback sneak 21 seconds before the intermission, giving the Sundevils a 13-6 lead at the break.
