The first ballot takes place on Wednesday, with the remaining eight candidates needing at least 30 votes to proceed to the next stage

But former Cabinet minister Simon Hart hit back against the critics, saying: “If Rishi Sunak is elected we have a very short two years to regain our status and reputation for good solid economic competence.”

He said: “I had to make some of the most difficult choices of my life as chancellor, in particular how to deal with our debt and borrowing after Covid. I have never hidden away from those, I certainly won’t pretend now the choices I made and the things I voted for were somehow not necessary.” He insisted it was “incredibly difficult” to resign from Boris Johnson’s Cabinet, saying the outgoing Prime Minister is “one of the most remarkable people I have ever met” and “has a good heart”.a role in his government, claiming not to have spoken to the former No 10 aide since Mr Cummings left Downing Street.

He told Andrew Marr on LBC: “Rishi Sunak is increasing corporation tax and it will be higher than not just America or Japan but France and Germany as well, and I’m worried that on our current trajectory we are heading into recession and we will be there too long.”
