To those of you who had your training interrupted, please cut yourself some slack — you did what you could, and there’s always the opportunity to try it again.
Woo, hoo. I’m so proud of you! SportMed’s Sun Run InTraining Program has seen us through another winter and you’ve made it.
I’ve just returned from a First Nations Run/Walk group in beautiful New Aiyansh, an hour from Terrace, and an incredible last workout on those lava fields. Hundreds of people throughout the province are moving and taking steps to better health because of this program, and you are now part of the wonderful vision that began some 24 years ago.
I love to ask what will be most memorable for people: The woman who was happy to quietly complete her workout at the back of the pack as others looped for her — “I’m a cancer survivor and it feels so good to be living like this.” The man who had been an athlete most of his life, but never a runner — “I thought running was boring and hurt too much, but not anymore.
To all of you: Take care to rest this week, choose healthy foods, sip your water, and don’t try anything new. And please do not complete the Sun Run or the 10K distance before April 14 — save your energy for event day. Final Tip: Always be careful not to start too fast down Georgia St. so you’ll feel fantastic when your raise those arms in victory crossing the finish line. As your virtual coach, I will have run every step of the way with each of you. Have a blast.
