A Summit County grand jury has charged Ohio Rep. Bob Young with misdemeanor charges involving an attack on a family member while another was hiding earlier this month.

Despite pleas from Statehouse leaders, Young, a Summit County Republican, has refused to step down. He is serving his second term. In a statement, said he “undervalued Christ as a priority in my life.”

“I love my wife and my family, and they are most important to me. As a state representative with a business, and a busy family of six, my life has been very stressful lately. On this particular evening at my home, we had some drinks, and I acted poorly and said things I shouldn’t have. My behavior, while not criminal, was inappropriate and out of character. I apologize to everyone involved, including and especially my wife and children. I also apologize to my constituents.

Earlier in the day, Young slapped a family member in the face after the person intervened to try to stop Young from yelling at the family member’s friend, cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer has reported.
