McIntosh's time of 3.59.06 at the 2024 Canadian Olympic & Paralympic trials was the fastest in the world. Rebecca Smith of Red Deer, Alta., also beat the standard at 57.89 seconds. The top two finishers in each discipline who beat the Olympic standard are technically "qualified to be nominated," per Swimming Canada wording.
McIntosh was just 14 when she had her breakout performance here in 2021. "I've been swimming this for quite a while and I've learned that for me, it's definitely more effective to go out slower and have a second 50 that's better than everyone else," she said.
