We also know that depression and other mental illnesses often play a role in suicides, and young people clearly need more support. Colleges and universities can offer some of that support, which is why more money and resources must be channeled toward mental health and intervention programs. The situation at UNT Dallas is not unique. Mental health advocates say many universities and colleges around Texas do not employ enough mental health counselors. The National Association of School Psychologists recommends that the counselor-to-student ratio sit at 1 for every 500. Getting closer to that number will take more investment.
