Dr. Julie Bowen, a radiation oncologist at Health Sciences North was co-author of a new research report published in the New England Journal of Medicine

A Sudbury oncologist has co-authored what is called ground-breaking research in the New England Journal of Medicine that could help spare many breast cancer patients radiation therapy, said a news release from Health Sciences North on Friday.

Dr. Julie Bowen, a radiation oncologist with the Shirley & Jim Fielding Northeaster Cancer Centre is one of the co-authors of the study. The HSN release said the research could lead to more personalized care and improved outcomes for some breast cancer patients.“Breast-conserving surgery has long been the preferred choice for women with early breast cancer," said Bowen.

The study looked at 500 women aged 55 and older from across Canada, including Northern Ontario, with a specific subtype of low-risk breast cancer: the luminal A subtype, said the release.
