Local students overcame ‘obstacles brought about by the pandemic’

Greater Sudbury’s young vocalists and musicians excelled at the recent Ontario Music Festivals competition.

Music students from 45 festivals, including Sudbury, took part in the provincial competition June 5-10. “After overcoming the obstacles brought about by the pandemic, many of our participants achieved the utmost level of excellence at this year's provincials upon resuming their public performances,” said Louis Simão, Sudbury Music Festival co-ordinator, in a press release.

Gavin Wong won first place for Intermediate Percussion and guitarist Vishnu Krishnan Nair won first place in Level 2.Earning third place in their respective categories were Jacob Gilpin , Vilma Tuunainen , La Salle S.S. Concert Band , and La Salle S.S. Jazz Band . Honourable mentions were given to Sophia Gould , Ewan Huang , August Zhao , Eric Huang , Jingxian Lian , Xiaoan Lian , Adele Bishop , Yvonne Gao , Max Gould , Chloe Smilek , and Algonquin Rd. P.S. Combined Choir . Selena Le received a Distinguished Honourable mention.All relevant information is available at www.sudburymusicfestival.ca.
