Civilians are protesting against Sudan's military leaders who have taken control of the country after removing president Omar al Bashir
Sudanese protesters gather in the streets of Khartoum as they continue to rally demanding a civilian body to lead the transition to democracy one day after a military council took control of the country, on April 12, 2019. veteran president Omar al Bashir in a palace coup, defied a night-time curfew to keep up four months of mass demonstrations on Friday.
The Sudanese army claims it has no ambition to hold the reins of power, saying it responded to calls from the people against his rule. Since returning to Khartoum from self-imposed exile, Mahdi has allied his party with the grass-roots who were the driving force behind the mass protests that preceded Thursday's coup.
Ibnouf said a transitional military council would replace the president for two years, adding that the country's borders and airspace were shut until further notice. But his apology fell on deaf ears among the protesters, who had repeatedly defied bullets and tear gas to keep up their sit-in before the army stepped in.
