Sudanese security forces attacked a protest camp in the capital, opening fire, torching tents and killing at least nine as the soldiers largely cleared away the sit-in aimed at pressuring the military to yield power, witnesses and protest leaders said.

Protesters pass makeshift barricades on their way to the sit-in outside the Sudanese military headquarters in Khartoum, Sudan, on May 14.

By midday, security forces controlled almost the entire camp, pushing out protesters and sealing off the area, two activists said. Other forces attacked similar sit-ins in Khartoum’s sister city Omdurman and the eastern city of al-Qadarif, activists said. For months, tens of thousands in the camp and other protest sites have been demanding a speedy transition to civilian rule.

The military’s only comment on the morning assault came in televised remarks by Shams al-Deen al-Kabashi, the military council’s spokesman. “Wounded people are lying on the ground [in] the reception area as there are not enough beds,” said Azza Kamel, a doctor at the Royal Care hospital.
