My grandfather, Richard Sharp Smith, was a prominent architect, but I didn’t know him. He died in 1924, when my father was still a child. He was a big presence in Asheville, in western North Carolina, where he designed many private homes in a blend of Craftsman, Shingle and Tudor Revival styles.
