Be king of the castle on a historic day out for all the family
The area around Merseyside is blessed with many castles, often in stunning locations, all full of history. Many of these national treasures now offer guided tours and some have accommodation or even offer weddings, so you can be your own lord or lady of the manor.
It was the seat of the Barons of Halton from the 11th century until the 14th century and it then passed to the Duchy of Lancaster. It was besieged twice in the Civil War after which its structure deteriorated. UNESCO considers Conwy to be one of “the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe”, and it is classed as a World Heritage site.
This tower is visible for miles around and is a major landmark visited throughout the year. It was built in the 1220s by Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester, on his return from the Crusades.
