Students at Laurentian University are voting on whether to continue a universal student bus pass service that paid out $1.1 million to the City of Greater Sudbury in the previous school year. The service, known as the 'U-Pass', has been in place since 2006 and is automatically added to the fees for every student at Laurentian. The cost of the service has increased over the years, but it still offers a significant discount compared to buying transit passes directly from the city.
Students at Laurentian University are voting this week on whether to continue a universal student bus pass service that paid out roughly $1.1 million to City of Greater Sudbury coffers in the previous school year.
That price is a significant discount to the more than $600 students would be paying for the same service if they bought GOVA Transit passes directly from the city, said a SGA representative.Examples of accepted reasons for an opt-out include requiring Handi-Transit services, or if a student lives more than a kilometre away from a bus stop. Simply having alternative transportation is not accepted as a reason for an opt-out.
The binding referendum will determine whether or not the U-Pass service is continued as of the 2024-2025 academic year, and if passed, will be valid for six years. Brown said the issue is “polarizing” for students, as those who have a vehicle or some other means of transportation “are becoming increasingly upset that they're being charged a fee” for something they don’t use.
Sudbury.com visited Laurentian University’s campus on Monday to speak to students about the U-Pass issue.
