As tech grows more common in classrooms, student 'geek squads' are popping up at schools across the country.
In this April 16, 2019, photo, eighth grade student technicians Mirakle Singleton, left, and Naureen Unaysa, right, instruct teacher Kaila Burgio in the use of a computer program at Buffalo Public School No. 37, in Buffalo, N.Y. The district and others around the country are training students to help with software and hardware issues that arise as teachers and students do more of their daily schoolwork on school-issued laptops and iPads.
It’s a strategy playing out around the country as schools increasingly supply devices to every student. Despite concerns from some about excessive screen time, fees sometimes passed along to students, and the challenge for teachers to incorporate the technology into meaningful lessons, the consortium predicted 38% of students would have not one, but two devices within three years and that 18 percent would have three devices in that time.
Already, the district is recruiting high school students through a city-sponsored program to become paid technology interns over summer break. Last year, 22 students spent six weeks in July and August cleaning, cataloguing and resetting devices, earning $10.40 an hour.
