Student attendance is down because of COVID, putting public school budgets at risk | Opinion
School districts around the country returned from the winter break and found themselves battling the impact of another COVID-19 variant.
Now as the superintendents of two of the largest public charter school systems in Texas, we are asking our state leadership to mirror the sense of urgency at schools and direct Texas federal education stimulus funds to offset the attendance losses at public school systems around the state. To address this funding shortfall, many public school districts, including Uplift and KIPP, are using our federal stimulus funds. Uplift received $75 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief federal funds to use over the next three years to address the academic and mental health needs of students from the pandemic. We will be forced to redirect about $15 million to $20 million to cover our state funding gap for attendance. For KIPP, that number is $22 million to $25 million.
