Federal prosecutors say Smith, 68, tried to evade paying taxes by transferring his properties into a trust, filing for bankruptcy using false information andSmith faces four counts of attempted tax evasion. The charges are for tax years 2004-2012 and 2014-2018, prosecutors said. One objection came as Smith had tried to say he doesn’t have a duty to file taxes because the tax code uses the term “persons,” instead of “men” or “women.” Another time he started by saying of the prosecutors, “They don’t want me to talk about,” but before he could finish his statement, objections reigned down from prosecutors. Another objection came when he tried to read part of the IRS code off his cellphone.
Prosecutors argued that Smith, however, began to take evasive action in 2010 when he transferred his home and other assets to a trust in 2010.
