Contract talks have reached an impasse between Hydro Ottawa and striking members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
The strike has now reached Day 52 as of Friday after unionized IBEW workers rejected the utility’s latest contract offer and walked off the job on June 28.The collective agreement with IBEW Local 636, which represents about 400 trades and technical Hydro Ottawa employees and inside workers such as customer service representatives, expired on March 31.
IBEW local representative Mike Hall confirmed the union has already met with the mediator and he expects mediation talks to commence on Wednesday. In a statement, Hydro Ottawa said it agreed to mediation after a month of negotiations, with progress made on issues of safety, benefits, allowances and premiums. Hydro Ottawa said the mediation process is expected to “help resolve the outstanding issue of wages.
Hydro Ottawa said it “believes that its last offer to the IBEW is very fair and very generous,” with a cumulative wage increase of 16.77 per cent over five years, an average increase of 3.35 per cent per year. The latest offer was “one of four separate offers tabled to the union over the last month in hopes of ending the strike,” Hydro Ottawa said in a statement Friday.
