‘Striking a balance:’ City reevaluating Brackenridge Park project, but many residents not having it
The Brackenridge Park design team, led by the firm SWA Group, hired four arborists to evaluate whether any trees can be kept in place or transplanted elsewhere, and they asked theto conduct a study on the effect of moving the river walls, which were built along Lambert Beach in 1920 and are in need of repair. Shifting the walls could enable keeping the trees intact.
“At an entry level, for most, the question is just whether we keep the trees or the walls,” said Kinder Baumgartner, managing principal for the SWA Group. “But I’m hoping some start to understand that … some portions are black and white, and others are more nuanced.”New Brackenridge Park renovation plan in the works to preserve more native trees
As initially designed, the project requires removing 105 trees from the park, including 10 heritage trees, which are deemed irreplaceable due to their size and rarity. These details were not known to the public until earlier this year, which spurred protest among residents who want to see the trees preserved.
The team also hired tree-moving experts to evaluate whether any trees could be replanted elsewhere. One heritage tree — a 44-inch live oak — met the requirements for both removal and preservation. The arborists recommended preservation instead of removal by pruning and root removal.‘This project needs to slow down’: Historic buildings vs. rare trees in Brackenridge Park battle
