Star Trek: Discovery established that Captain Christopher Pike knows the Cardassians, allowing Strange New Worlds to reintroduce them.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the perfect show to explore how the Cardassians became the totalitarian society seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The exact date of First Contact between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union has never been established in Star Trek canon, but there's substantial evidence to suggest it happened prior to SNW.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Strange New Worlds has taken creative approaches to canon, most notably with the inclusion of the Gorn prior to the official First Contact with the species in Star Trek: The Original Series. It's already been established in several Star Trek shows that the Federation had made contact with the Cardassians at some point in the early 23rd century.
Relations between Cardassia and the Federation were definitely established before Star Trek: Discovery season 2, episode 1, "Brother". An Easter egg contained in the service record of Captain Christopher Pike revealed that the USS Enterprise captain had previously been awarded two prestigious Cardassian medals - the Legate's Crest of Valor and the Proficient Service Medallion.
Strange New Worlds' Cardassians Can Finally Answer A TNG Spock Mystery It's established in Star Trek canon that, due to a lack of resources on their home planet, the tired, poor, and sick Cardassians embraced a more militaristic society based on the conquest of other species. It was this new approach that ultimately led to the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. The Enterprise could be sent to Cardassia Prime on a humanitarian mission to aid the afflicted population, placing Pike and Lt.
It was never explicitly stated in TNG exactly what the nature of Spock and Sarek's disagreement was, but Star Trek: Strange New Worlds could finally answer this lingering question. Perhaps Spock is sickened by the shift in Cardassian politics, seeing the brutality of the regime firsthand. It would mean that, a century later, Ambassador Spock would be vehemently against the appeasement espoused by Federation luminaries like Captain Jean-Luc Picard , putting him at odds with Sarek.
