The three men were rescued Monday from the rudder of the oil tanker Alithini II by the Spanish coast guard,The survivors were all from Nigeria, the Spanish government’s delegation in the Canary Islands told The Associated Press. One of them remained hospitalized Tuesday.that African migrants often use the Canary Islands as a gateway to get to Europe. Migration to the islands increased 51% during the first five months of this year, CNN reports.
Other people were previously discovered clinging to rudders while risking their lives to reach the Spanish islands located off northwest Africa.
