Storms and Flooding Cause Chaos on Greek Island of Crete
Crete Flooding, Greece Storms, Ierapetra

Heavy storms and flooding on Crete trapped people in cars, forced tourist evacuations, and damaged seafront venues. Emergency services remain on high alert as cleanup continues.

Severe weather has caused flooding, road damage, and widespread disruption across the Greek island of Crete, with emergency services working to clear debris and restore transport.

Tourists Evacuated as Flooding Hits Ierapetra

The flooding trapped people in their cars and forced the evacuation of some tourists, local officials said. An aerial view near Ierapetra town on Saturday showed flooded areas as the storm battered the island. The mayor of the Cretan port of Ierapetra, Manolis Frangoulis, said a few tourists had to be evacuated and a woman was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The town, on the southeast coast of Crete, was hit by torrential rain Friday and Saturday, cutting off roads that had been filled with debris. Frangoulis said cars ended up in the sea and the department was working to at least re-establish transport. On the road between Ierapetra and Sitia, flooding trapped 23 people in their cars, state television channel ERT reported.

Three tourists and their taxi driver had to abandon their vehicle after flood waters began to carry it away, ERT added. The force of the flooding also washed some cars and trees into the sea. At the port of Canea, a popular tourist destination, giant waves damaged seafront restaurants and tourist venues. The civil protection agency called on residents of several towns to limit their movements.

Emergency Services Clear Crete Roads

The deputy governor of the Heraklion region, Nikos Syrigonakis, said emergency services were working to clear small landslides and remove debris from local roads. Syrigonakis told the Greek news agency ANA that authorities remained on high alert, monitoring the water levels of streams and rivers. Between Friday and Saturday at 1550 GMT (6:50 pm), 42 cm of rain fell in the Canea department, according to the Greek national observatory.

The EMY weather service said wind speeds reached eight and nine on the Beaufort Scale. The storm caused road damage and widespread disruption across the island, with some cruise ship visitors also unimpressed with downtown Sydney, N.S. , though that detail is unrelated to the Crete weather event. Emergency crews continued working through the aftermath to reopen roads and clear landslides.

Local officials urged residents in several towns to limit their movements as the cleanup continued. The flooding left debris scattered across roads, and authorities warned that conditions could remain dangerous as water levels were still being monitored. The full extent of the damage was still being assessed on Saturday.
