Prosecutors stayed the breach of trust charges against Norman on Wednesday, citing “new information” his legal defence team provided in March. He’d been accused of leaking cabinet documents related to a $700-million shipbuilding contract. Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said the federal government will pick up Norman’s substantial legal tab.

The spectre of political interference has loomed large over the Norman case from the start, with his defence team arguing that the initial charges were politically motivated. But after the charges were stayed, lawyers for both the defence and prosecution said there was no political interference behind the decision to free Norman.

As for China, Canadian officials have struck out in their attempts to meet with their Chinese counterparts to smooth over relations—five federal ministers have asked to meet with high-level Chinese officials but their requests were ignored.
