A local environmental advocacy group is asking Ontario’s housing minister to nix the expansion of Durham Region’s urban boundary.Minister Paul Calandra has yet to give final approval to Durham’s Regional Official Plan, which was. The plan would open up more than 9,000 acres of rural land to urban development.
Early in the process, regional staff had been proposing a less-protracted urban expansion, with higher population density. However, councillors wound up supporting an alternate option, which had been proposed by the Building Industry and Land Development Association . BILD, which advocates for the land development industry, argued in favour of more medium-density housing types.future flooding risks and infrastructure costs.
“Your taxes are going up because Durham Regional councillors are being reckless with our vanishing local farmland and natural assets,” wrote the group. “We must stop the urbanization of 9,000 acres of new land that is not needed for affordable housing and to meet our growth targets.”
