The Diamondbacks promoted outfielder Stone Garrett to the majors on Wednesday, capping an unusual route to the big leagues for the hulking slugger.
SAN FRANCISCO — Stone Garrett thought it was a little strange that all of his Reno Aces teammates were hanging around the clubhouse long after the game on Tuesday night, but he didn’t think too much of it.
Garrett, 26, a hulking, power-hitting outfielder who joined the Diamondbacks at Oracle Park on Wednesday, took an unusual route to the majors. “I said, ‘Hey, do you know anybody that needs an outfielder? I feel like I can still compete at Double-A or above,’” Garrett said. “He said, ‘No, but let me ask around.’”
Garrett wasted little time taking advantage of the opportunity. Last year in Double-A Amarillo, he posted a .280/.317/.516 line with 25 homers. After re-signing with the Diamondbacks in the offseason, Garrett proceeded to hit .275/.332/.568 with 28 homers for Triple-A Reno.“I just think the game I needed to play to reach this level wasn’t what were trying to mold me into,” he said. “The Marlins wanted me to use the whole field, shoot the ball the other way.
