Today marks the first payment from a guaranteed income program in El Monte, California, which begins sending $500 payments to recipients every month.
Recipients of this program will receive their payments on a debit card at the start of every month. The cards were distributed to participants at El Monte City Hall during an in-person presentation about the program. The program is intended to help mothers in the city, which is home to more than 100,000 people.
While payments for the program will typically be issued on the first of a month, the monthly payment will be issued on the Friday before the turn of the month when a month starts on a Saturday or Sunday. Applications for the program opened on March 27, and they remained open for a little less than three weeks. The application window closed on April 15. The recipients were selected by April 26.The program was open to people who live in El Monte, are a single female head of household with no spouse or partner in the house, and have children younger than 17 years old.
