Former Australian rugby player Steve Meehan, whose career was cut short by injury, has been appointed as the coach of the Canadian men's national rugby team. Meehan, with a successful coaching career spanning Australia, France, England, and Japan, aims to bring a fresh perspective to the Canadian team. This appointment marks his second stint in Canada, having been previously named coach of the Toronto Arrows.
An injury in his first year out of school caused his shoulder to repeatedly pop out of place. "It brought a bit of a sudden halt to things," he said. His local club only went up to the under-12 level and a group of under-14 players at his school, Marist College Ashgrove, wanted to keep playing. The club told them they could if they found coaches, so they approached Meehan and a few friends.
While Meehan has yet to set foot in the country, it's actually his second job in Canada. In October 2023, he was named coach of the Toronto Arrows. But the Toronto job prompted him to watch a lot of Canada games as well as its opposition. And he sees opportunities. Meehan plans to be in Canada early in the New Year, officially starting in April, and will be based out of Rugby Canada's home base of Langford B.C. Wife Beth will be joining him in Canada, with their 28-year-old son visiting.
Meehan left Bath in 2011 and returned to Australia, serving as attack coach for Western Force — joining former Bath coach Michael Foley — and then the Queensland Reds.
