“It really does trigger him in a very deep way.”

He’s fraught over his mother’s declining health, which she’s asking him to keep a secret, his city councilman’s to-do list is doubling by the day, and that busy schedule keeps him away from what he loves most: his girls. This intruder is bound to take simmering tensions to a boil, and if Randall responds how he has in the past, he’s going to get burned.
“There’s just a baseline level of fear that Randall lives with,” Brown says. “And he does his best to suppress it with his sort of adorkable sense of humor and trying to be a very positive person.” But every once in a while, a trigger surfaces. “I think the home invasion, along with his mother’s health, is a deep concern to him,” he says. “And things definitely bubble up.”
Randall fans hate to see him reach yet another painful breaking point, but the show is only portraying howrears its head. To his wife Beth’s dismay, the father of three has resisted seeing a therapist. It would require him to relinquish some control, which he doesn’t handle well. “He considers himself to be an intelligent human being who’s capable of taking care of his own problems,” he says. “I think there’s probably a lot of very smart people that are resistant to therapy because they’re like, ‘If I can’t figure it out myself, then who is going to be more capable?’” That’s definitely a thought process Randall shares, but it won’t stop his loved ones from pushing him to do what’s best. “Whether or not he chooses to actually adhere to their advice,” Brown hints.
