Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones discussed several topics following Thursday’s practice.

Jones touched on multiple topics after Thursday’s practice, including the running back trio of Royce Freeman, Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance throws to target as he rolls out during training camp practice in Oxnard, California, July 30, 2024., the team still wanting a defensive tackle, Jones praising the 2024 rookie class and running back Ezekiel Elliott and Royce Freeman., who is out for the season with a torn ACL. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said the Cowboys wanted Williams to play 70% of their defensive snaps this year up from 28% last year.

“He’s done a good job,” Jones said. “He just keeps grinding it out and he’s going to get a ton of reps this preseason and play a ton in the games and turn him in, put him in and wound up. He’s done a lot of really good things. I mean there’s some things obviously he’s got to continue to improve on and some consistency things but there’s a lot of things to like.”Jones said Prescott most likely will not play this preseason and Rush will get a handful of reps.

“We’re going to give him most of the reps, obviously Dak will get little to nothing, and Cooper not a lot too,” Jones said. “Cooper is a seasoned backup vet too and we know he can go win games with the right group of guys.” Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott handed the ball off to running back Ezekiel Elliott during a mock game play in Oxnard, Calif., on Aug. 1.The Cowboys will use three running backs this upcoming season. Elliott is the starter but won’t get a large number of carries like in most years. In seven seasons with the Cowboys, Elliott averaged 4.8 yards per touch and had over 300 touches three times and more than 275 touches twice.“His GPS numbers don’t show any drop-off at all,” Jones said.
