Here's why our risk of depression increases when we're not able to do our everyday activities during the pandemic, says ckbergland

, the study's senior author and a professor emeritus of psychiatry at the University of Oxford, added."Mood homeostasis is an aspect of the broader concept of mood regulation, but it specifically refers to the moment-to-moment regulation of mood states via choices of activities," the authors write.

The researchers found that mood homeostasis is often compromised in people with a history of depression. Because of this, the authors speculate,"Mood homeostasis may, therefore, provide new insights to guide the development of treatments for depression." Everyday activities that facilitate mood homeostasis vary from one culture to another. Interestingly, the researchers found that physical exercise was linked to the highest increase of mood in study participants from high-income countries. In contrast, religion was the primary mood-increasing activity in most low- and middle-income countries.

Unfortunately, the laws of"mood homeostasis" suggest that refraining from everyday activities that make us feel good can exacerbate depressive symptoms and create a downward spiral. Shelter-in-place mandates that disrupt mood homeostasis create a double whammy for people already prone to clinical depression before the pandemic. (
