After the Nazis and then the Communist coup in 1948 in Czechoslovakia, my mother said we need to leave. We were fortunate to immigrate to the U.S. in 1950. I was 11 years old.I will always recall asking my mother why we came and her answer was, “Under the communists, you wake up one morning, your friends are missing and you don’t know what happened to them.”
Czechs were always educated, excellent workers and kind people. Today, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are democratic countries that had the misfortune of Nazi and Communist occupation for half the 20th century.Re: “ ’Oppenheimer’ has underlying accuracy — However, some liberties were taken, simplifications made,” Sunday news story.
However, King’s dream could not have become a reality without the help of the vision and support of one spiritual white man: President Lyndon Baines Johnson. His administration championed the historic civil rights legislation ending racial discrimination in the United States.
