AlterClinic said by trapping, spaying/neutering and vaccinating healthy community cats, communities can reduce overpopulation in their area.

Stark County non-profit piloting program to reduce stray cat populationCLEVELAND, Ohio - A Stark County low cost spay neuter clinic is piloting a community cat project with the goal of alleviating the problems surrounding stray cats in the county’s neighborhoods.

After providing this care for the cats, AlterClinic said volunteers will continue to support them with food, water and monitoring. “Traditional models of removing cats from communities are replaced with providing those cats, and the people who care for them, services that allow them to stay in their homes, even if that home is outdoors,” AlterClinic said. “This is one more way Canton can be a leading city that does what’s right for people and pets.”

According to AlterClinic, research shows that community cat programs such as this one are effective at shrinking outdoor cat populations over time while minimizing euthanasia. This studies also show the cats involved in community cat programs typically have low rates of disease and enjoy healthy life spans.

AlterClinic will be hosting an informational meeting for community members at J. Babe Stearn Community Center, 2628 13th Street in Canton on March 30 at noon.
