Star Wars Jedi: Survivor starts off with a unique design choice, and hopefully other games will follow its lead.

. Like many AAA success stories before it, other games are sure to draw a lot from it, but I hope one subtle choice carries more weight than any other aspect. From the classic series Metroid to the Uncharted franchise, taking a protagonist’s powers away at the beginning of a sequel almost feels like a given for videogames.

But not every game’s protagonist is a supersoldier with space bird DNA and a power suit fighting parasitic jellyfish and rogue robots on derelict space stations and hostile worlds. Nathan Drake and Leon S. Kennedy don’t need to walk around with a machine gun or rocket launcher strapped to their backs, so it makes sense when things go awry and they need to fight their way through a tight spot and pick up something with a little more firepower along the way.

In long-running series, that choice also opens up an opportunity for developers to include flashes of fanservice. Trekking back to Metroid for a moment, being presented with a rehashed—but subversive—take on the original’s iconic Morph Ball puzzle inis a reward for fans and an opportunity for its developers to reflect on how far the series had come in the seven-year jump from 8 to 16-bit.

Thankfully, Respawn doesn’t make that move, nor does it need to. It’s a decision that understands the first game’s strengths. While I had my gripes with 2019’s saber-swingin’ adventure, I do really like many of the choices made with Cal’s character and the methods that its narrative uses to propel him from scrapper to Jedi Knight before our eyes.for some, it goes left where many videogame sequels go right, and it’s better off for it.

choice resonates in future videogame sequels. The decision not to chop down Cal’s skill tree opens up an opportunity for Respawn to plant an orchard with the fruits that the first game bore; it lets developers play with the previous game’s mechanics and introduce new ones instead of re-tiling spent soil. I haven’t played more than the first few minutes of the game, but I’m positively stoked to discover wild new ways to carve up space fascists with my lightsaber.
