Star Trek: Lower Decks finally gave one controversial TNG episode a better explanation thanks to a one-off line from Ensign Levy in season 4.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Star Trek: Lower Decks finally fixed a controversial storyline from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Lower Decks season 4, episode 8, "Caves" saw the newly-appointment Lieutenants Junior Grade trapped in a cave on an away mission gone wrong. To pass the time while they searched for a way to escape, each main character recounted a story from another cave-related misadventure they had been involved in recently.
While on a mission to Kyron 4, Levy and Boimler were stranded in a cave during an ion storm. Levy, a known conspiracy theorist, annoyed Boimler with his sharing of several wild Star Trek conspiracy theories while the searched for a way to escape. However, one of his theories proved to be correct when he and Boimler were ambushed by the Vendorians, a shapeshifting alien race first introduced in Star Trek: The Animated Series.
Lower Decks Finally Explained Star Trek’s Warp Speed Limit Issue During the encounter with the Vendorians, Levy posed the idea that they had planted false information about Star Trek's warp speed damaging subspace, an idea that was introduced in TNG season 7, episode 9, "Force of Nature" and has been controversial ever since.
However, since TNG season 7, the franchise has not done a good job of maintaining the idea of a warp speed limit, or establishing if the ban even still exists. This has created several plot holes during other series, since other Starfleet ships have been consistently shown breaking the warp speed limit with no explanation.
Why The Warp Speed Limit Is So Controversial "Force of Nature" was intended to serve as a commentary on real-world environmental issues, but given that warp travel in one of Star Trek's core concepts, the franchise shot itself in the foot when banning high-speed warp travel.
