To celebrate Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's 30th anniversary, IDW has released a 'lost episode' that lives up to the show's iconoclastic spirit.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s “lost episode” lives up to the hype and is sure to delight fans of the show. To help celebrate Deep Space Nine’s 30th anniversary, IDW Publishing is releasing a new miniseries, The Dog of War. Billed as a “lost episode,” The Dog of War starts off simple–with the arrival of a smuggled dog aboard the station, but soon escalates into a complex moral dilemma, one that could change the course of the Dominion War. Fans of Deep Space Nine will find much to love here.

Set at the height of the Dominion War, The Dog of War kicks off when Captain Sisko discovers a smuggled Borg component aboard the station. Sisko tracks the Borg tech to one of Quark’s holosuites. Entering, Sisko discovers the last thing he expected to see: Vic Fontaine, the holographic lounge singer, surrounded by dogs.

2 Images Close Such a dilemma was nothing new for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Premiering in 1993, Deep Space Nine was a spin-off of the mega-popular Star Trek: The Next Generation. Set aboard a former Cardassian space station near the entry to the only known stable wormhole, Deep Space Nine was decidedly darker than its predecessors. The station was truly the frontier, and out here, Starfleet’s high ideals may not always stand up.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Was a Bold Trek Show 2 Images Close Deep Space Nine took the franchise to places it had never been before. It was the first Trek show not set on a starship; during the epic Dominion War story, it was the first Star Trek to show life during wartime. The Dominion War story in particular would come to define the show.

Deep Space Nine fans will love The Dog of War 2 Images Close The Dog of War is rooted firmly in this tradition. The smuggled Borg interface has presented Captain Sisko with an opportunity to end the Dominion War once and for all–yet it also presents a huge ethical dilemma for Sisko, namely to use it and risk losing his humanity in the process; matters are compounded by Sisko’s history with the Borg.
