PLYMOUTH, N.S. — On May 9, 1992 at 5:20 a.m., the Westray mine in Plymouth exploded, killing 26 miners. May 9 marked the thirty-second anniversary of the disaster. Wreaths were laid at the foot of the monument to remember the lives of the miners who died early that morning. In the inquiry following the disaster, significant changes were made in the form of more robust regulations and safety requirements.
Justice K. Peter Richard led a public inquiry into the disaster, commenting on the camaraderie felt by miners."People in the industry, at all levels, regard what occurred at Westray as a personal matter affecting them as if it had happened in their own backyard. It is for them a family tragedy." Photo by Sarah JordanIt has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
