After a shaky first half for Bo Levi Mitchell, the Calgary Stampeders turn to Jake Maier in their tight win against the Toronto Argos
But once Jake Maier replaced Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback, something clicked and the Stamps suddenly found themselves cruising to a 22-19 win over the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday night at BMO Field.
It was a game the Stampeders absolutely had to win, especially with a short week and a trip to Winnipeg to take on a well-rested Blue Bombers team. That’s going to be a tough one, and losing both these games would have meant the Stamps were .500 after 10 games. Not good enough. They were down by nine points late in the third quarter and they were struggling to sustain drives and keep the offence on the field.
It was 10-10 at that point, although three Boris Bede field goals put the Argos up 19-10 by the midway point of the third quarter. As it has been so many times this season, it was the Stamps defence that stepped up when safety Elie Bouka intercepted a pass from McLeod Bethel-Thompson – who completed 27-of-43 passes for 276 yards — and somewhat incredibly ran it back for a 62 yard touchdown.
Defensively, Mike Rose was his usual dominant self, Shawn Lemon had a sack and forced a fumble that essentially ended the game with 30 seconds left and Natrell Jamerson, playing in his first CFL game, looked like he might be a player.Article content
