Allan Fischer was convicted in June of defrauding Canada Post of more than $235,000
The prosecution has until Feb. 7 to complete its investigation into whether 59-year-old Allan Fischer – the convicted fraudster investigators nicknamed the Stamp Guy because of his frequent exploitation of a loophole in Canada Post’s bulk mail contracts – is really dead.As the Canadian national soccer teams head to their respective FIFA World Cups, Derek Van Diest is on the scene to cover all the action.
What the court knows is that Fischer, convicted in June of defrauding Canada Post of more than $235,000, had been clear during the sentencing stage of his case that he was suffering from a variety of health problems, including advanced Crohn’s disease, depression, attention deficit disorder, sleep apnea and heart issues.
While his trial and the sentencing submissions were all done via teleconference, Nicholson told Fischer he had to attend court in person for sentencing, which was adjourned until after Fischer said he had a critical appointment to review his medical condition. The Crown received a phone call before the hearing from a woman who wouldn’t give her name, who said Fischer was dead. Another woman contacted Campbell, the Crown, and sent a death certificate. The sentencing was adjourned so the Crown could gather more information.
However, he said he has been told that once he reviews the report: “I’m likely to be satisfied that he has passed.” Nicholson pointed out that “if there’s confirmation that there has been the medically assisted death of someone Mr. Fischer adduced to do that,” then Fischer would be in much deeper trouble than the Canada Post fraud.
