The restaurant, located in a strip mall at 1524 North Vasco Road, is a family-run affair with Christine Burks as the main chef. She has a background in Southern home cooking and Cajun cuisine and draws upon the culinary knowledge of her late husband, John.

“We’re bringing the South and cultural foods to the Bay Area,” Burks says. “We serve a variety of foods: gumbo, oxtails, fried chicken and fried fish mixed with a barbecue flair and more. We’re also offering Sunday brunch options of chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits and our family’s homemade biscuits and syrup.”Sides abound, from mac and cheese to greens to black-eyed peas, and for dessert there’s sweet-potato pie and 7 Up cake.

“We offer both seafood and meat-centered po’boy options,” Burks says. “Visiting, you will see our influences of New Orleans and Monroe, Louisiana.” Diners at the grand opening on Feb. 18 can listen to live blues and get 50 percent off a second plate. Though it’s celebrating its opening now, the restaurant has actually been serving for a couple of weeks. Reviewers on Google Maps have praised its gumbo as “mighty fine” with “shrimp melted in my mouth.”
