ICYMI: Herman Perry, 72, started his five-leg 'bucket list' trip in 2015 with a desire to follow old fur trade routes. 'They did it by canoe and by foot, so we did it by canoe and by foot,' he told SaltWire Network.

Herman Perry completed the final leg of a trans-continental canoe trip this summer, from Labrador to Alaska.ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — In 2015, Herman Perry began the trip of a lifetime.

The 72-year-old St. John’s man, who was accompanied by his brother-in-law Paul Snow, has long had an interest in the fur trade and the role it played in what is known today as Canada. This interest had led the avid canoeist to travel many of the fur trade routes used by trappers in the olden days, culminating in this cross-continental trip from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Paddling up the Rat River towards Destruction City as part of the last leg of a trans-continental canoe trip.. - Contributed More than once along the trip, the people they encountered offered rides or help with their equipment during portages, but they always declined, Perry said, since they wanted to do it the way it was done in the old days, on their own.

Perry said he greatly enjoyed the trip, even the parts where he lugged a canoe for 20 kilometres or so. That said, he will probably stay closer to home next summer.
