The emergency rooms at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre are experiencing long wait times and Eastern Health is advising residents to only visit the rooms for a medical emergency. FileST. JOHN'S, N.L. — With the Health Sciences Centre and St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s experiencing long wait times, Eastern Health is reminding residents with non-emergency medical issues to seek other options.
The health authority said this approach will help reduce long wait times for patients and help staff focus on delivering safe and quality care for those in critical medical care. Patients with non-life-threatening medical needs are asked to strongly consider if an emergency room is needed and should only go if all other options are considered.
Those experiencing non-life-threatening injuries can visit a primary health provider, visit a walk-in or primary health clinic or call 811 for health advice or experiencing a mental health crisis as alternatives. However, those with a medical emergency requiring an ambulance should continue to call 911, and only those with a serious or urgent medical problem should head to the nearest open emergency department.
