The city of St. John’s will bring down its 2023 municipal budget at city hall this afternoon.Of particular concern for the city over the last few months has been the cost of diesel, which has greatly impacted the cost of operating their Metrobus fleet.
Earlier this year, the city campaigned for some relief from the federal government on that front, but to no avail. In last year’s budget, the city raised the residential and commercial mil rates, as well as the water tax. However, there were no cuts. There is no indication yet as to how the fiscal constraints of the last year will impact the 2023 budget.
Speaking with reporters on Friday, Mayor Danny Breen wouldn’t discuss the contents of the budget, saying he’ll leave that to Finance Lead Ron Ellsworth this afternoon.Councillor Ellsworth will deliver the budget at 3:00 p.m. in the council chambers.
